Cubed Steaks and Gravy

Every now and then you just need something for dinner that's easy. Life is busy and there's always plenty to do. When the price is right, I like to get some cubed steaks and put them on to cook slow while potatoes are boiling for mashed. That way I can tend  to other chores while dinner cooks.
I have tried cooking cubed steaks all kinds of ways - fried, broiled, baked, battered, but the best method I have come up with is quickly seared with spices and then simmered in gravy. This is a simple dinner that any beginner cook can do.

Cubed Steaks and Gravy
1 pkg. 4 cubed steaks

steak seasoning
1 tsp. garlic or onion powder, your preference
2 tsp. oil
1 can (10 oz.) beef gravy

*Optional flavor boost
1/4 onion, sliced thin
1/2 bell pepper, (any color) sliced thin
1/2 lb. mushrooms, whole or halved, depending on size and preference

In large skillet with lid, heat oil. Sprinkle meat with steak seasoning and garlic (or onion) powder.

Over medium heat, sear about 4 minutes per sides, reduce heat. If using optional veggies, remove steaks from pan and saute until soft, about 5 minutes.

In skillet, combine meat, gravy and veggies, if using. Cover with lid and simmer 1 hour. Serve with mashed potatoes and veggie.

*Note - If making 6-8 cubed steaks, use 2 cans of gravy and optionally, a whole pound of mushrooms.
